Reel Good Fishing on Ray Tucker’s Arkansas Outdoors – An Arkansas Fly Fishing Story and a dream come true since the age of 7

An Arkansas Fly Fishing Story and a dream come true for us.

Being invited to talk about Reel Good Fishing on Ray Tuckers Arkansas Outdoors is something I don’t take lightly. Sitting with Ray and Bryan is surreal to me. Honestly, it’s one of those moments that makes you stop and think about how it all started.

For me, that goes all the way back to when I was about 7 years old.

That’s when my mom first put a fly rod in my hand.

I didn’t know anything about technique, matching hatches, or reading water back then. I just knew I loved being outside, standing in the water, and trying to figure it all out. Somewhere along the way, that turned into something much bigger than I ever expected.

Now, I get to guide people fly fishing near Little Rock for Smallmouth bass and trout on the Little Red River in Heber Springs, helping them experience what fly fishing in Arkansas is all about.

More Than Fishing. Why This Matters

Fly fishing has a way of slowing everything down.

When you’re standing in a river, focused on your cast, watching the current, listening to the water. It pulls you out of everything else going on in life. Stress, noise, distractions… they fade.

And that’s not just a feeling,it’s real. It’s tangible.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature can significantly reduce stress, lower cortisol levels, and improve overall mental well-being. Activities like fishing, especially something as focused and rhythmic as fly fishing can have similar effects to meditation.

Research published in environmental psychology and health sciences has shown:

  • Time outdoors reduces anxiety and depression
  • Water environments (“blue spaces”) improve mood and mental clarity
  • Repetitive, focused actions (like casting) promote a calm, regulated state

Programs like The Mayfly Project have built their entire mission around this idea and is another Arkansas fly fishing story. Using fly fishing to mentor and support kids through difficult situations, proving firsthand how powerful time on the water can be.

I’ve seen it myself.

People show up carrying stress, frustration, or just needing a break—and somewhere between that first cast and the sound of moving water, something shifts. Please consider donating or mentoring in this program.

From Learning to Loving It… to Living It

Fly fishing has a way of sticking with you.

What started as a kid learning the basics has turned into a full-on passion that shapes my everyday life from tying the patterns we’re using to writing fly fishing reports. These days, I’m not just fishing. I’m constantly thinking about water levels, fish behavior, seasonal changes, and how to help someone else have that same moment where it all clicks.

That’s what Reel Good Fishing is really about.

It’s not just about catching fish. It’s about:

  • Figuring things out
  • Spending time on the water
  • Resetting your mind
  • Learning something new every trip

Whether it’s someone’s first time holding a fly rod or someone trying to dial in their skills, those moments are what make guiding worth it.

Why the Little Red River and Saline River Mean So Much

We’re lucky here in Arkansas.

The Little Red River gives us incredible trout fishing not far from Little Rock. Clear water, technical fishing, and a place where you can really grow as an angler.

Then you’ve got the Saline River, which is a completely different experience. Smallmouth bass, moving water, and a more wild feel that keeps things interesting every single trip.

Being able to guide on both rivers means every day is different—and every trip offers something people don’t realize they need until they’re out there.

If you’re looking for fly fishing near Little Rock, you really don’t have to go far to find something special.

The People Who Make It Possible

No one does this alone.

I’ve been lucky to be around some incredible people and organizations along the way. Groups like Arkansas Fly Fishers and The Mayfly Project are doing real work—getting people involved, teaching the next generation, and giving back in ways that matter.

That’s something I believe in and want to be a part of.

And most importantly, none of this would be possible without my wife, Rachelle.

She’s been there from the beginning, supporting this whole journey. Even when it was just an idea. Turning something you love into a business isn’t easy, and having someone in your corner like that means everything. I’m truly thankful for all of these people. That’s what this sport does and I’m in love with it

A Full Circle Moment

Getting to talk about Reel Good Fishing on the radio felt like a full circle moment.

From being a kid with a fly rod in my hand…
To now helping other people find peace, confidence, and joy on the water…

That’s something I’ll never take for granted.
