Fly Fishing Arkansas: Friends, Laughter, and a First Fish to Remember
When people search for fly fishing in Arkansas, they’re usually looking for more than just fish. They’re looking for a real experience—something they’ll remember long after the trip is over.
This past weekend was exactly that.
Fly fishing Arkansas offers up some of the most diverse water in the country, from cold water trout rivers to warm water smallmouth streams. Weekends like this show exactly why anglers continue to choose Arkansas for guided fly fishing trips.
I spent time on the water with great friends made through The Mayfly Project, celebrating a milestone birthday the best way we know how, on the river, surrounded by good people, good fishing, and a lot of laughs.

Fly Fishing Arkansas on the Norfork River

We kicked things off on the Norfork River, floating in a drift boat and enjoying one of the most consistent trout fisheries in the state.
Starkey, Nick, and Cliff were there, and Cliff brought along Bill and Corey. It didn’t take long for the tone of the weekend to be set. Laughing, fishing, and enjoying everything that makes fly fishing in Arkansas special.
Corey had to leave early to take care of things at home, which I completely understand. As a dad myself, family always comes first.
Bill stayed with us, and I’m glad he did.
One of the highlights of the trip was discovering Bill is a sleeper fly tyer. He tied a flawless articulated streamer—clean, balanced, and built exactly how a proper streamer should be. It’s the kind of fly that works on Arkansas trout and bass, and something any angler would be proud to fish.

Moments like that are what separate fly fishing in Arkansas from just another fishing trip. It’s about the people and the shared experience as much as the fish.
Fly Fishing on the White River

We also spent time running jet sleds on the White River, covering water and staying on active fish throughout the day.
This is where fly fishing Arkansas really shines. One river offers a slow drift boat experience, while another allows you to move quickly and adapt. That versatility is what makes Arkansas one of the top destinations for fly anglers.
Between the Norfork and the White River, the weekend showed how different techniques, water types, and approaches all come together in one place.

Fly Fishing on the Saline River

After the weekend wrapped up, I headed home and got right back to guiding—this time on the Saline River, where Reel Good Fishing operates daily trips.
The Saline River offers a completely different fly fishing Arkansas experience. Instead of trout, anglers target smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and panfish in shallow, clear water.
That evening, I was guiding a young angler named Jackson and his dad, Stuart.
Jackson is seven years old, and this was only his second time using a fly rod. He brought a ton of energy to the trip and kept everyone laughing, especially when he started joking with his dad between casts.
For many clients, fly fishing Arkansas becomes real the moment they hook their first fish—and this was one of those moments.
A First Fish on a Fly Rod

We kept things simple and focused on the fundamentals—casting, retrieving, and staying patient.
Then it happened.
A clean strike.
A little chaos, a little coaching—and suddenly Jackson was hooked up.
A largemouth bass.
His very first fish on a fly rod.
The excitement in that moment is something you can’t fake. As a guide, those are the experiences that matter most. Not just catching fish, but helping someone experience fly fishing Arkansas for the first time.
Why Fly Fishing Brings People Together
This weekend was a reminder that fly fishing in Arkansas is about more than just rivers and fish.
It’s about people.
From celebrating a 40th birthday with friends on the Norfork River, to covering water on the White River, to guiding a young angler on the Saline—it all comes back to connection.
Connection to the water.
Connection to family and friends.
And connection to moments that last.
That’s why so many anglers return to fly fishing Arkansas year after year.
